Behind the Artwork
This tree carries its history openly, its ridges and twisted forms shaped by weather, time, and persistence. As I studied the wood, I began to see what looked like a gathering of human figures, grasping one another and clinging to the tree as though caught within a scene from Dante’s Inferno. Some appear to be pulling themselves free, while others seem to be holding on simply to keep from falling.
I chose black and white because it deepens that tension, allowing the forms within the wood to emerge without distraction. To me, the image reflects our deeply human struggle to belong while remaining individual, to be recognized without becoming separate, and to stand out while still longing to blend safely into the whole. What might first appear damaged becomes a living record of endurance and connection. This tree reminds me that our scars, contradictions, and efforts to hold one another are not interruptions to beauty. They are often where beauty becomes most honest, personal, and profoundly alive.
